This extraordinary ball gown by Christian Dior, of foggy gray silk tulle, arrayed with an overlay of scallop-shaped petals, is called “Venus.” The bodice and shell forms of its skirt are embellished with nacreous paillettes and sequins, iridescent seed beads, aurora-borealis crystals, and pearls. The glittering overskirt and train adumbrate both the seashell motif and the crescent wave patterns of Botticelli’s Venus. Dior is best known for his revival of the wasp-waisted silhouette seen here. His celebrated first collection of 1947 was dubbed the “New Look” by the influential American editor Carmel Snow, because the corseted, full-bosomed, and hourglass shaping had not been seen for decades. In fact, the “New Look” was an old look revived. After the deprivations of World War II, Dior believed that the survival of the haute couture relied on its ability to restore fantasy and luxury to women’s wardrobes. The fragile effects of this gown, which merges Second Empire romanticism with the classical iconography of ideal and eternal beauty, recall Dior’s belief that “fashion comes from a dream.”

There are various methods for putting on socks. In our research the most popular ones are the rolling method—where the sock is rolled in an outward motion from the cuff, through the heel and foot and down to the toe, then placed at the toe and then rerolled onto one’s limb in reverse—and the bunching method, a less precise sibling of the rolling method where the sock is haphazardly crumpled at its opening and then tugged up and around the foot. These seemed like good places to start, immediately presenting us with the obvious problems of efficiency. But early in our tests another snare revealed itself: fabric stretching at the heel, quickly transforming a snugly fitting sock into a drooping tubular rag that gathers unfashionably at the ankle. The challenge was to develop a failsafe procedure that would minimize fabric stretching and speedily navigate the sharp angles at the ankle and arch. By fashioning a gently used milk carton into a funnel of sorts, we made quick headway. But it wasn’t until we tried adding a packet of unflavored gelatin to the washing machine, along with our standard detergent, that we began to vastly revolutionize the tactic.
